Special Minority FellowshipThe Ohio Space Grant Consortium (OSGC) is strongly committed to student diversity in its undergraduate scholarship and graduate fellowship programs. In order to increase the number of disadvantaged minorities engaged in its graduate fellowship program, OSGC, in 2004, instituted its Minority Fellowship Program Award. Support for the award was received from NASA Headquarters. The award is to be offered on an annual basis. Awards to Master's students are for $16,000 plus tuition for a calendar year; these may be extended for an additional six-month period. Awards to doctoral students are for $20,000 plus tuition for a calendar year; these may be extended for an additional two years. The fellowship is to be awarded for pursuit of a Master's or Doctoral degree in one of the STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering, or mathematics), and can be used at any of the OSGC universities that offer graduate degrees in those disciplines. Eligible students are underrepresented-underserved minority seniors who are holders of undergraduate OSGC scholarships at any of the OSGC universities. The fellowship award winner will attend the OSGC Annual Student Research Symposium and make a brief presentation of his/her graduate research each year over the duration of his/her graduate work. 2006-2007 Special Minority Fellowship RecipientMs. Tasha R. Williams is the recipient of the second Special Minority Fellowship Award. Ms. Williams is a full-time Master's student in Biomedical Engineering at The University of Akron. She received her undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering from Florida State University in 2004. 2005-2006 Special Minority Fellowship RecipientMs. Denia (Watts) Coatney, an undergraduate OSGC Scholar and BS recipient in Manufacturing Engineering from Central State University in 2005, received the first Special Minority Fellowship Award and is now a full-time M.S. student in Industrial and Systems Engineering at The Ohio State University.
